TPBE3 Conference

Following the recent TPBE 3 Conference hosted by the Institute of Chartered Foresters. Charlotte discusses Policy and GI.

Ian Buchanan, Manager Natural Heritage and Forestry

Regional Municipality of York.  Mr Buchanan provides an insightful summary of his work within the Regional Municipality of York and how he has managed to work with elected politicians and community groups to establish and urban forest which is thriving. He shares his experience of securing that vital political buy-in and funding which ensures the long-term maintenance and survival of urban green infrastructure.

Matt Larsen-Daw, Woodland Trust

Working specifically on the Tree Charter Project that GreenBlue Urban have long been proponents of The Woodland Trust Tree Charter and also contributing to the development of the forthcoming Woodland Trust Street Trees Project. The Tree Charter Project will be officially launched On 6 November 2017, the 800th anniversary of the influential 1217 Charter of the Forest. So far, in excess of 50,000 tree stories have been submitted to provide the background to the development of the Tree Charter Principles.

The principles of the Tree Charter are as follows:

• Thriving habitats for diverse species
• Planting for the future
• Celebrating the cultural impact of trees
• A thriving forestry sector that delivers for the UK
• Better protection for important trees and woods
• Enhancing new developments with trees
• Understanding and using the natural health benefits of trees
• Access to trees for everyone
• Addressing threats to woods and trees through good management
• Strengthening landscapes with woods and trees

Encouraged by the integration of the principle that new development should be enhanced by trees. It is our aspiration that through collaborating with organisations like the Woodland Trust that we can promote support for a wider tree planting agenda, not only focused on rural landscapes and ancient woodland but recognising the need to mitigate against the impact of development.

Professor Peter Duinker – Dalhouise Univesity Canada

School for Resource and Environmental Studies, focuses his research on urban forestry and ecosystems services in both Canada and Europe. In this podcast, Professor Duinker and I discuss collaboration between researchers and the private sector and the need to actively interrogate the differences between governance models in different municipalities. Having both attended TPBEIII we were in agreement that the major challenges facing the urban forest in the future will revolve around the tiers of government and the funding, political support for and the long term management of urban forestry programmes.
