Charlotte was fortunate to catch up with friend and passionate advocate for quality trees Tim Arkell, Principle Landscape Architect of Waterman Group. Tim was instrumental in delivering the landscape design of the Graven Hill site – 1,900 new homes featured on Grand Designs, Channel 4.
The scheme will include a new town centre and local amenities, Tim is justly proud of the diversity of species, and the disease-resistant strains of trees delivered on-site and emphasise the need to apply the principle of right tree, right place. Where possible planting into soft was advocated and the use of StrataCells used to best effect in urbanised, hard landscaped areas and connected to the overall sustainable urban drainage agenda on site.
Tim emphasises the need for multidisciplinary approaches which ensure highways engineers are happy to adopt geocellular systems such as the StrataCell system and that all stakeholders are happy with the design, implementation and cost of the scheme.
Charlotte discusses the importance of developing modelling software and disruptive technologies such as MDSUDs offered as part of Microdrainage with Max Anderson from Innovyze.
